Ohhhh that's cold!
With all of our recent disucssions about snow and ice, today we decided to have
a discussion about the animals that live in cold Arctic places.
We discussed how cold the water is and how it would feel if we had no protection.
So, we put our hands into ice cold water to see how it felt...
COLD!
We then talked about how animals in the Arctic protect themselves and keep warm.
We learned about blubber and how different animals have sometimes a layer that is 12 inches
thick! This helps the animals to stay warm in the very cold water.
So, our experiment was to make our own blubber layer and see if our hand would still be
really cold in the water or if it would be warm.
We took shortening and made a thick layer in a bag and then put another bag inside that
to protect our hand from getting all yucky.
We then put our hand into the two bags and put it back into the icy, cold water.
To our amazement, our hand didn't get cold! It stayed perfectly warm!
It was a successful experiment!
Jakob, putting his hand in the blubber-bag!
